The Ghana Police Service has arrested eight suspects over an attack on a Metro Mass Transit workshop in Sunyani in the Bono Region.
According to the Police, the suspects broke into the workshop and threatened workers to leave the premises.
This brings to 97 the total arrests made in connection with looting and destruction of property following the December 7 elections.
ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday noted that the “Police rapid response teams within the area of the workshop responded swiftly to the distress call from the workshop and arrested the eight people.
“These eight suspects had unlawfully entered the premises of the Metro Mass Transit workshop, attacked and threatened the workers to leave their office. We wish to assure the public that the police and the other security agencies are working together to ensure peace and security within all our communities.”
Meanwhile, calm was also restored at the headquarters of Metro Mass Transit Limited on Monday, December 9 after a group of individuals, reportedly supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), forced their way into the premises.
According to security officials, about 35 individuals arrived at the headquarters, allegedly to “safeguard” the company’s property after receiving information suggesting looting had begun following the NPP’s electoral defeat.
The incident came in the wake of reports of theft at the Ayawaso East NADMO office, where significant property was stolen.
Police quickly intervened at the Metro Mass headquarters, de-escalating tensions. The 35 individuals left the premises, and operations at the headquarters have since resumed without disruption.
