The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has responded to allegations of disrupting the collation process for the Ablekuma North Constituency and attacking Electoral Commission (EC) offices, stating that the clash was a result of a dispute with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over access to the collation room.
The EC had accused the Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of leading party supporters in an attack on its offices during the collation of polling station results for the Ablekuma North Constituency.
The incident which occurred on Friday, January 17, 2025, resulted in significant property damage and caused distress among staff members.
But Musa Adamu Kalamu, the NDC Ablekuma North Organiser in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Friday explained that the EC had requested their presence at 8 am to ensure a timely completion of the collation process. He said the EC had also instructed that only two representatives from each party be allowed in the collation room to maintain order.
Upon arrival, he said the NDC representatives encountered NPP supporters in the corridor leading to the collation centre. Kalamu stated that they withdrew to the car park and waited for the EC staff to commence the re-collation. However, by 10 am, no EC staff had arrived, prompting the NDC to move towards the collation room.
Kalamu alleged that the NPP had been using a separate, locked entrance to access the collation room, which was not available to the NDC. This led to a confrontation between the two parties as both attempted to gain access to the collation room. The situation escalated into a physical altercation, which was eventually broken up by the police.
The NDC maintains that the clash was solely about gaining access to the collation room and not an attempt to disrupt the collation process. Kalamu emphasised that the NDC was committed to ensuring a fair and transparent collation of results for the Ablekuma North Constituency.
