Anthony Sarpong has been appointed as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

Mr. Sarpong is a Senior Partner at auditing firm KPMG. His appointment which takes immediate effect comes after Julie Essiam officially resigned from her position.

The appointee has 14 days to accept or decline the offer.

“His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of Republic of Ghana in accordance with 195 (1) of the Constitution and Section 13(1) of the Ghana Revenue Act, 2009 (Act 791) has appointed you as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority pending receipt of the Constitutionally required advice of the government Board, given in consultation with the Public Services Commission”, a letter from the Office of the President stated.

 Profile

Anthony Sarpong is the Senior Partner of KPMG Ghana, where he provides strategic direction and oversees operations to achieve the firm’s corporate objectives.

With over 22 years of professional experience across Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa, he specialises in Audit (financial statements, projects, and special engagements), accounting advisory, corporate recovery and insolvency.

Before becoming Senior Partner, he served as a Partner and Head of Audit at KPMG Ghana.

He also led the Financial Services sector and managed risk management within the Ghana practice.

His extensive expertise spans consumer markets and financial services, and he has spearheaded some of KPMG’s most complex and large-scale cross-functional projects.

Anthony is a member of several professional bodies, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and the Ghana Association of Restructuring and Insolvency Advisors (GARIA).

He holds an MSc in Financial Risk Management from London Metropolitan University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Manchester and a First-Class Honours degree in Business Administration (Accounting) from the University of Ghana.

Julie Essiam resigns

Madam Essiam in her resignation letter dated January 20, 2025 and addressed to the President through the Finance Minister-designate, was grateful for the opportunity to serve.

“With the greatest depth of gratitude, after five and a half years of an incredible career at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), I write to resign from my position as the Commissioner-General of the Authority, with immediate effect,” she stated.

Ms. Essiam, who was appointed Commissioner-General on March 24, 2024, by former President Akufo-Addo, served in the role for less than a year. Prior to her appointment, she led the GRA’s Support Services Division.

In her letter, she highlighted the Authority’s achievements under her tenure, particularly its revenue performance for the 2024 fiscal year.
