Upper East Regional Minister-Designate, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has outlined his plans to tackle tensions arising from mining activities in the region.
Speaking during his vetting at the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 27, Mr Atanga identified key issues fueling conflicts between large-scale mining companies, small-scale miners, and local communities.
Mr. Atanga emphasized the importance of dialogue and collaboration to resolve these issues.
He promised to engage all stakeholders, including large-scale mining companies, small-scale mining associations, and local communities, to foster coexistence and ensure equitable access to resources.
Mr. Atanga also noted the potential for mining activities to contribute significantly to the economic growth of the region, provided that the tensions are managed effectively.
He reiterated his commitment to fostering an environment where both large-scale and small-scale miners, as well as the communities, can thrive.
“It has come to our knowledge that some tensions occur in the areas are partly because the large mining companies probably have not given some space for the small-scale mining people to operate.
“Sometimes that is the cause, the second one could be the community requesting for royalties or their involvement. And so, what I will do is to engage the stakeholders, the companies, the communities and the mining groups.
“These people who are doing the small-scale mining have formed some associations, some groups. So, I will engage their leadership to find out how we can get a better solution to the problem. So that we can co-exist and exploit the resources for the benefit of all of us and Ghana.”
