Member of Parliament for Ejura-Sekyedumase, Mohammed Bawah Braimah, has called on the Inspector General of Police to establish a committee to investigate the events that led to the burning of a police station in Ejura.
Braimah stressed the need for accountability within the police force, urging that any officers responsible for the disturbances be held accountable for their actions.
The incident, which resulted in the destruction of the Ejura District Police station and other properties, was sparked by poor communication from the police.
The situation began after the death of Shaibu Masawudu, who passed away while in police custody at the Ejura Government Hospital.
Masawudu, who had voluntarily reported himself to authorities over allegations of phone theft, began experiencing severe stomach pain and vomiting while detained.
He later died at the hospital, but the police did not inform his family before transporting his body to Mampong for an autopsy.
The family claimed the police abandoned his body in the bush, prompting outrage from the youth of the area, who stormed the police station, leading to its destruction.
An autopsy report later revealed that Masawudu died of natural causes. However, Braimah called for a thorough investigation to clarify the circumstances and bring closure to the incident.
“We will have a volatile society and so the police administration should take steps to get to the root of this matter. I will say the cause of this ravaging of the police station is as a result of the poor management of information by the police and the poor handling of the situation.
“I will appeal to the national security for the deployment of more policemen in the area.”
Meanwhile, the Ejura Traditional Council is worried police in the area failed to pick up intelligence on the incident, which they could have averted.
A member of the Ejura Traditional Council who doubles as the Nifahene of the Chief of Ejura, Nana Kwadwo Osei Ansebie II, said the Council will continue to engage with the police administration to find a lasting solution.
“They will want us to engage them and on that personal level, discuss, review and expect them professionally, the regional police commander from Ashanti North and the IGP are all aware of the situation, so we know they will also support them so that we look at the arrangements on the ground and the action that could be taken.”
