Residents of Gbegbeyise-Shiabu in Dansoman, within the Ablekuma West Constituency, have called on the government to fast-track the completion of the 5-kilometre sea defence wall project.
The project, which has experienced significant delays, was initiated to address years of damage caused by flooding and tidal waves, offering much-needed protection to vulnerable residents in the area.
Hudson Armah, Unit Committee Chairman for the Shiabu, Agege Mamponse Electoral Area, has expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the project.
He noted that the pace of work has been inconsistent, raising concerns about whether it is being executed as planned.
“After the erosion of the sea, everything was okay when they started the project. It was going on successfully. But now it looks more like shoddy work because the contractors are not coming like they used to. I had a conversation with one of them and he told me that there is a change of government. So, as of now, we don’t even know our fate,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Site Manager Tsogbe Godswill dismissed these concerns, stating that the project is proceeding on schedule and is expected to take three years to complete.
He clarified that work often takes place at night or during specific times to ensure efficiency.
“The work has not been inconsistent as we started. The people are complaining that the work is inconsistent. But it is because we work mostly at night and access to the site with materials is difficult because it traffic.
“So, most of the time we work at night into the day. It is sometimes helpful because if the tides are high we stop and then when it comes down we continue,” he stated.
