The Ghana Police Service has announced the implementation of comprehensive security measures in Accra and across the country for the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect John Dramani Mahama and Vice President-elect Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 6, 2025, the police detailed the deployment of intermittent roadblocks, traffic restrictions, and diversions in various parts of Accra to ensure a secure and orderly event.
Security Operational Perimeter
The following areas have been designated as security operational perimeters for the event:
- Ako Adjei Interchange
- AU Roundabout
- State House
- Osu Cemetery Traffic Light
- Accra Sports Stadium
- Independence (Black Star) Square
- Ministries Traffic Light
- Customs Headquarters Traffic Light area
- Gamel Abdul Nasser Avenue
Road Closures
Roads within the designated security perimeter will be closed to human and vehicular traffic from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on January 7, 2025. Specific roads to be closed include:
- 28th February Road from Customs Headquarters towards Castle Road Junction.
- Both sides of Lokko Street from Osu Cemetery Traffic Light towards the AU Roundabout.
- Starlet 91 Road from Ministries Traffic Light Intersection towards Accra Sports Stadium.
Traffic Diversions
The following diversions will be in effect:
- Traffic from 28th February Road (La, Labone, and Osu areas) towards the Central Business District (CBD) will be rerouted via Salem Avenue Traffic Light to Oxford Street.
- Traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street to Independence Square will be diverted to Liberia Road at the Customs Headquarters Traffic Light Intersection.
- Motorists from Lokko Street heading towards Castle Road must use Ajumaku and Oxford Streets.
- Traffic from AU Roundabout to Castle Road via Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be diverted to Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads, linking with Gamel Abdul Nasser Road near the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
Parking and Public Access
Attendees are encouraged to use designated parking areas at:
- The Forecourt of the State House
- Effua Sutherland Park
- The premises of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture
Residents within the security operational perimeter, invited dignitaries, motorists, and pedestrians are urged to use alternative routes, comply with police traffic directives, and adhere to all security protocols.
Parliamentary Swearing-In
The police also confirmed security arrangements for the swearing-in of Members of Parliament-elect and the Speaker of Parliament, taking place today, January 6, 2025, at Parliament House.
