Swedish coach Kim Björkegren has been appointed as the new head coach of Ghana’s national women’s football team –  the Black Queens.

Björkegren, 43 brings a wealth of experience, having managed top-flight clubs in Sweden, Cyprus, China and the United States.

He takes over from Nora Hauptle, who guided the Black Queens to secure qualification for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco but has since moved on to coach Zambia.

“In a career covering 18 years, Kim, now a UEFA License A Coach, has gained significant experience and success coaching in Sweden and other countries. Kim’s successes include his winning the Cyprus top Women’s league with Apollon Ladies as well as the Damallsvenskan (Swedish Women’s top league) with Linkopings FC. In the 2020-2021 season, he was adjudged the Coach of the season in Cyprus”, the Ghana Football Association announced.

The tournament is scheduled to run from July 5 to July 26, 2025.

Björkegren leads a revamped technical team that includes Charles Sampson and Anita Wiredu as assistant coaches.

Enoch Jordan Daitey, from Accra Hearts of Oak has been named the team’s athletic coach, while Nassamu Yakubu will serve as the goalkeeper coach.

With seven years of coaching experience in women’s football, Björkegren has achieved notable success, winning league titles with Apollon Ladies in Cyprus and Linköpings FC in Sweden.

His immediate challenge is to lead Ghana beyond the group stages at the upcoming Women’s AFCON, a feat the team failed to achieve during the 2018 edition.
