The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called for calm following a viral social media video suggesting a major bushfire near the Akosombo Dam.

The service insists that the fire is not near the dam as reported and poses no threat to it and that there is no cause for alarm.

The service has acknowledged the situation and emphasised that its personnel are actively monitoring the fire.

“We wish to set the record straight that the fire seen in the video is absolutely nowhere near the Akosombo Dam. However, we acknowledge that the situation is still being closely monitored by our personnel, who have been put on high alert.”

However, due to the inaccessibility of the terrain, the team has been unable to reach the location to extinguish the fire.

The GNFS said it is working with local authorities and stakeholders to prevent the fire from spreading to residential or commercial areas.

To safeguard the Akosombo Dam and surrounding communities, personnel have been stationed near the dam to monitor the situation and respond promptly to any developments.

In light of the incident, the GNFS also reminded the public of the importance of bushfire prevention and the need for proactive measures to avoid such events.

The GNFS recently launched the 2024/2025 Bushfire Prevention Campaign to educate the public on effective strategies for preventing bushfires.
