AGA School and Williams and Brew School have announced a revised reopening date of Monday, January 27, 2025, following a delay from the original schedule of Wednesday, January 22, 2025. The decision to postpone the resumption was made to prioritize the safety and well-being of students, staff, and other stakeholders in Obuasi.
The delay comes after a violent confrontation between local miners and military personnel tasked with securing the AngloGold Obuasi Gold Mine. The incident, which resulted in nine deaths and several injuries, has prompted the schools to reassess their reopening plans.
Preliminary reports suggest that the miners had allegedly invaded one of the company’s mine shafts, demanding access to a concession for their operations. However, the exact cause of the altercation remains under investigation.
In a statement to the community, the schools’ management emphasized the need for a peaceful environment before reopening. “This decision is based on the need to allow calm to fully return to Obuasi to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and key stakeholders,” the statement read.
While the delay may disrupt academic schedules, management assured that steps are being taken to recover lost instructional time. Adjustments to the academic calendar will include the cancellation of the mid-trimester break before Easter to compensate for the missed hours, particularly for students preparing for the Cambridge IGCSE, Checkpoint Examinations, and the 2025 BECE.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this unplanned closure may have caused to your schedules,” the statement added, expressing gratitude for the understanding and support of parents, students, and faculty. The schools also affirmed they are working closely with relevant authorities to ensure a safe return for all.
