The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Military, has successfully restored calm in Nkwanta and surrounding areas in the Oti Region following renewed communal clashes.

The violent disturbances believed to be linked to a communal dispute, have tragically resulted in the deaths of five individuals, with an additional five people injured.

Eight buildings and one shop were also destroyed during the unrest. The injured victims are receiving medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the morgue for preservation and further investigation.

In efforts to foster peace, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) personally engaged the three chiefs in the area via phone, urging them to collaborate with security agencies to maintain law and order. On the ground, the Oti Regional Police Commander has been meeting with local chiefs, opinion leaders, and community members as part of ongoing peace-building initiatives.

A statement released on January 17, signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of Public Affairs, reaffirmed the commitment of the Police Service and Military to ensuring the safety and security of residents.

The statement assured the public, particularly the people of Nkwanta and its environs, that collaborative efforts between the security forces will continue.

Investigations into the cause of the disturbances are ongoing, as authorities work to prevent any further escalation of violence.
