The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (EduWatch), Kofi Asare, has urged the Education Minister-Designate, Haruna Iddrisu, to focus on reducing the rural-urban disparities in access to education and learning outcomes.
He highlighted the significant gap in educational attainment, noting that only three out of 10 children who start kindergarten in northern Ghana progress to Junior High School 3, compared to eight or nine out of 10 in urban areas.
Speaking to Citi News, Asare called on the government to address these disparities and leave a lasting legacy.
“We are way back and a much more catalysed action is required. Areas, for example, providing furniture for rural schools, adequate textbooks, and infrastructure for deprived schools because the biggest challenge in the basic education sector is the rural-urban divide and the higher dropout rates.
“So we expect the minister to hit the ground running in outlining policies and interventions to close the rural-urban gap and if you like, the north-south divide. We want to see much more affirmative action,” he said.
