Sekondi-Takoradi residents shocked by Akufo-Addo statue destruction

Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi have expressed shock over the destruction of former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s statue, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, January 13, 2025. This follows an earlier incident last December when the statue’s leg was vandalized.

The statue, unveiled by the former president on November 6 during his Thank-you Tour of the Western Region, was placed in front of Effia Nkwanta Hospital in Sekondi. Its unveiling sparked widespread criticism, with many residents expressing dissatisfaction.

Speaking to Channel One TV, they argued that the former president’s contributions to the region did not merit such a monument.

Reacting to the recent destruction, some residents condemned the act, stating there could have been a more appropriate way to address their concerns about the statue, despite earlier threats to destroy it.

A resident who spoke to Channel one TV noted that “it is just unfortunate that it has happened this way, even though there were complaints around its erection, there could have been a more appropriate and civil way to remove it rather than just destroying it like that, because what has happened can create a negative impression about the current party in government, even though they might not support it, it could be an intentional thing to bring them down.”

Another resident Ekua Tawiah, added, “It is very painful for such an act to happen because the stationing of the statues has not caused any harm to anyone nor does it demand water or food from anyone, I feel they shouldn’t have destroyed it.” She said.

However, some residents also support the decision on the statue being vandalized.

Another resident who failed to mention his name said “There is no sense in the stationing of the statue, the roads are still under construction, it is good we have destroyed it and nothing can happen. The road is what they should focus on and not the statue.”
