In a heartfelt message to the people of Ghana, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed his profound gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation.
His acknowledgment comes at the conclusion of an eight-year tenure as Vice President, during which he played various roles in the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Bawumia’s journey into politics began after a distinguished career in economics and public service. Born on October 7, 1963, in Tamale, in the Northern Region, the Vice President grew up in a family deeply rooted in public service. His father, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, was a former Chairman of the Council of State, a background that undoubtedly influenced his commitment to national service.
Bawumia earned his academic credentials from prestigious institutions, including the University of Buckingham, where he obtained a First-Class degree in Economics, and Oxford University, where he earned a master’s degree. He later completed a PhD in Economics at Simon Fraser University in Canada, focusing on macroeconomics and international trade.
Before entering politics, Bawumia served as a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, where he was instrumental in implementing key financial reforms, including the redenomination of the cedi in 2007.
His political journey took flight in 2008 when he was selected as the running mate to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Though the NPP lost the 2008 elections to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bawumia’s performance on the campaign trail marked him as a rising star in Ghanaian politics.
Bawumia’s moment in the spotlight came in the 2016 general elections when he and Nana Akufo-Addo led the NPP to a resounding victory over incumbent President John Dramani Mahama.
As Vice President, Dr. Bawumia took charge of the government’s economic management team, spearheading several initiatives aimed at stabilising and growing the economy. Under his watch, the administration introduced digital reforms such as the National Digital Property Addressing System, the Mobile Money Interoperability system, and the digitisation of government services.
The NPP’s success in the 2020 elections secured Bawumia a second term as Vice President.
The 2024 elections marked a turning point, as the NPP was defeated by the NDC, led once again by John Dramani Mahama. This shift ended the NPP’s eight-year administration and brought Bawumia’s tenure as Vice President to a close.
In his farewell message on Facebook, Bawumia expressed gratitude to the people of Ghana, stating: “Thank you all Ghanaians for all the support you gave me as Vice President of the Republic from 2017-2025. God bless our homeland Ghana.”
