Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine has announced plans to review the treason felony charge against activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor, suggesting the charge could be dropped.
This comes as the High Court sets February 17, 2025, to empanel a new jury for Barker-Vormawor’s trial.
The FixTheCountry convener is accused of threatening to stage a coup if the government passed the controversial E-Levy Bill in February 2022.
In a court session on January 15, Barker-Vormawor’s defence team submitted a medical excuse for his absence, claiming he was unwell.
However, the state attorney, Esi Yankah informed the court that she had not yet reviewed the document and requested that proceedings continue, as the defence had also filed a request for a stay of proceedings.
As the court prepares to move forward with the new jury next month, the Attorney General’s office has assured of studying the docket to take a decision on the matter.
“With respect to the charges against Oliver, I will definitely also study the docket. The statement that he made is one that was made in the media. The docket has been built, you know, and I will study the docket and based upon my own opinion of whether or not there are trumped up charges, I may, you know, drop the charges.
“I am not going to stand here and assure you that I am definitely going to drop the charges, not having read the docket and come to an opinion as to whether or not the charges were properly laid and should be dropped,” Dr Ayine told journalists in an interview after his swearing-in in Accra on January 22.
