Amazon Web Services (AWS) will begin charging certain taxes and levies on services provided to customers in Ghana effective March 1,2025.
In reponse to an email sent by Citi Business News, Amazon confirmed that the move is in compliance with local tax regulations by the government, requiring AWS EMEA Sarl – the entity responsible for the company’s operations in the region, to apply these charges.
The taxes include a combined 6% levy comprising the National Health Insurance Levy, the Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy, and the Covid-19 Health Recovery Levy.
Additionally, a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) will be imposed on all service charges.
The changes will affect all AWS customer accounts registered in Ghana, with VAT invoices issued accordingly from the effective date.
AWS has advised customers to review and update their account details, particularly those who are VAT-registered businesses.
Customers with a Tax Registration Number (TRN) are encouraged to ensure their information is up to date to facilitate VAT deductions where applicable.
With cloud computing playing an increasingly vital role in business operations, the new tax obligations could have implications for companies relying on AWS infrastructure in Ghana.
Businesses are expected to factor in the additional costs as they continue to leverage AWS services for digital transformation and operations.
AWS has urged affected customers to liaise with their internal tax and accounting teams to ensure compliance before the March 1 deadline.
