The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced the appointment of Dr Shafic Suleman as the Acting Executive Secretary.

President John Dramani Mahama made the appointment in accordance with section 33 (1) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission Act, 1997 (Act 538). Dr Suleman will serve in this capacity pending approval by the Board, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.

Dr Shafic Suleman brings a wealth of expertise to his new role. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Institute for Oil and Gas Studies, University of Cape Coast, Ghana. His specialisation includes energy and sustainability, energy and petroleum economics, energy policy and law, climate change, and energy finance and risk management.

Dr Suleman holds a PhD in Energy and Sustainability from De Montfort University in Leicester, UK, and an MSc in Energy Management from Robert Gordon University Aberdeen, UK. He also has a BA in Geography from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana. Additionally, he is a certified Energy Risk Professional (ERP) from the Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP-USA).

Dr Suleman’s extensive experience in teaching, research, and consultancy services in energy and related areas positions him to drive the Commission’s strategic goals forward. His expertise in energy and sustainability, petroleum economics, energy policy, climate change, and risk management will be invaluable to PURC.

The PURC in a statement dated February 3 noted that it was committed to protecting the interests of consumers, utility service providers, and stakeholders in Ghana’s power and water sectors.

The Commission expressed full support for Dr Suleman and President Mahama’s vision for the electricity, water, and natural gas sectors.

They look forward to an inclusive and transformative tenure under Dr. Suleman’s leadership.
