Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, has downplayed the likelihood of President John Dramani Mahama removing Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa solely due to criticism.
His remarks follow calls from some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters demanding Madam Mensa’s removal.
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV with Bernard Avle, Kwakye Ofosu stressed that President Mahama would strictly follow legal procedures before considering any action.
He further noted that no evidence of misconduct has been presented to the President to justify such a process.
“They were not [fair], I have been a fierce critique of the current leadership of EC. The law is clear, The Electoral Commissioner has security of tenure, you cannot remove her until she turns 70 when she goes on retirement, or you cannot remove her until stated misconduct.
“As we speak, the President has not been given evidence of stated misconduct. If that happens, he will kick start the process that will lead to investigations and take the necessary action.
“But on his own, he’s not going to sack anybody simply because he didn’t appoint them. He doesn’t have a history of doing that. Especially where in places the law regulates how appointments or removal should be done.”
He noted that some appointees from Akufo-Addo’s tenure would retain their positions due to legal provisions governing their appointments and removals.
