The National Labour Commission (NLC) has urged the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Rashid Pelpuo to expedite the appointment of government’s representative on the Commission.
The NLC emphasised its inability to hear cases as a result of the change in government, citing the exit of members who were appointed by the previous administration.
Speaking to Citi News, Executive Secretary of the NLC, Ofosu Asamoah feared a further delay in appointing the government’s representative could increase pending cases.
“The NLC is made up of seven members. Two nominated by government, two nominated by Organised Labour, and two nominated by employers. Then with the employers and Organised labour, they nominate the chair. Due to the change in government and the presidential transition bill, the government nominees have had to cease, and we are waiting for a replacement.
“So I was only urging upon the minister that now that he has assumed office, the earlier we get the replacement the better because we have between 80 to 120 cases fresh cases being received in a month. So the longer we stay in the appointment or in filling the position for the commission to be properly consulted to continue with the hearing of cases, we will have cases piling up.”
