Sammy Darko, Head of Communications and Strategy for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), has clarified that declaring individuals as fugitives is not intended to disgrace them.
On February 12, the OSP officially named former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a suspect in four high-profile corruption investigations, including cases related to the National Cathedral project and Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML).
During a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng stated that Ofori-Atta is now a wanted person and must return immediately for questioning, warning that failure to comply could result in legal action to compel his return.
Speaking on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Mr. Darko dismissed claims that the OSP is merely engaging in theatrics, emphasizing that its actions are in line with due process.
“The OSP is a very reasonable organisation, a very reasonable law enforcement agency, it has said that it always goes on the civil tangent by inviting you, by trying to use all the necessary processes.
“It’s only when you refuse to attend, then the OSP will apply the necessary measures and force to ensure your attendance to the OSP. And when we do that, that is not playing to the gallery.
“When we do that, that is not because we want to disgrace somebody. We do that because that is the due process that we have to follow. So, we only declare you wanted when you decide to give us an opportunity to do so. If Mr Ofori-Atta turns himself in, there will be no need for this.”
He dismissed claims that the investigation into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta only began recently.
“Who said that we just started investigating Mr Ofori-Atta? None of the cases we put out today [February 12] the investigations did not start in January 2025. It’s long investigations, investigations take time.”
