The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim has indicated that he will engage with the regional minister, the Electoral Commission, and other stakeholders to fix a date for the re-run of the Council of State election in the Ashanti Region.
The Council of State elections in the Ashanti Region was disrupted by chaos during the process on Tuesday, February 11.
Speaking on the matter, Mr. Ibrahim noted that a date will soon be fixed for the re-run.
He added that, according to the Constitution of Ghana, the 14 elected members of the Council of State can proceed with their first meeting.
“The exercise did not end successfully. So maybe we now have to meet with the regional minister, the Electoral Commission and others to look up a possible rerun date. Article 92 Section 10 of the Constitution says that a vacancy created in the Council of State does not mean that its first meeting cannot proceed.
“They can proceed with their meeting while processes are made to make sure that the two vacancies are filled. Of the 16 regions, 14 ended successfully and there is only one tie and one disrupted.”
