Kenyan President William Ruto has extended his congratulations to Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on his election as Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission.
Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, secured the position in a tense seventh-round vote during the election held on February 15, 2025, at the 38th Ordinary Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The contest was highly competitive, with Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, initially appearing to lead in the early rounds.
In a Facebook post on February 15, President Ruto pledged Kenya’s full support for Youssouf as he leads the AU Commission to the next level.
“You have the trust of the AU Assembly, and Kenya pledges her full support to you as you steer the Africa Union Commission to the next level. This election was not about individuals or nations, it was about Africa’s future. ”
He also expressed gratitude to the AU Assembly for acknowledging Raila Odinga’s vision and priorities for the African Union, as well as for providing him the opportunity to share his passion for the continent’s transformation.
“While the outcome of this election did not favour Kenya’s candidate, I wish to convey my deepest gratitude to the entire leadership of our great continent. Thank you for considering the Right Honourable Raila Odinga’s vision and priorities for the African Union and for according him the opportunity to share his passion for the continent’s transformation.”
