The Minister for Communications, Digitalisation, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has strongly criticised the Minority in Parliament for its opposition to President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to govern with only 60 ministers.
The Minority had demanded that President Mahama apologise to Ghanaians, arguing that it was unrealistic to effectively run the country with such a limited number of ministers.
They contended that reducing the size of government to just 60 ministers would undermine administrative efficiency and hinder the delivery of essential government functions.
However, in an interview with Accra-based JoyNews, Sam George dismissed the Minority’s argument as hypocritical, pointing out that some of the same individuals who are now questioning Mahama’s plan had previously supported a similar proposal by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He went on to highlight that President Mahama’s proposal is actually more streamlined than what the previous administration had suggested.
“For those who keep saying that 60 should be abandoned, they were the very same people who championed 50 under Bawumia and thought that it was workable. Even though people have now explained that what Bawumia promised was 50 ministers and 16 regional ministers. So we would have had 66.
“But President Mahama was clear about his 60, including regional ministers. So you are having both ministers and deputies, 44. I believe that it is possible to do it. I keep saying it is possible to reset this country. It is possible to reset the governance architecture. And President Mahama has a blueprint. Let’s test it.”
