Three passengers were killed, and a bus was completely burned after gunmen attacked travelers at Wulugu in the North East Region.
The victims were part of a group traveling from Kumasi to Garu when their bus developed a fault near Wulugu. The driver left the stranded passengers to go to Walewale in search of spare parts.
In his absence, armed men stormed the scene, set the bus ablaze, and killed three selected passengers.
Upon receiving a distress call, police officers arrived at the scene and discovered the bodies of three young men, believed to be in their 20s.
Two were found lying in a pool of blood by the roadside, while the third was located about 200 meters away.
The bodies have been transported to the Bolgatanga Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, while efforts continue to identify their relatives.
Two of the victims have been identified as Frafras, while the third, an Ashanti man, was traveling to Bolgatanga.
Eyewitnesses reported that upon hearing gunshots, passengers fled toward the Wulugu community, but the assailants pursued some of them, leading to the deaths.
At the crime scene, police retrieved four empty shells suspected to be from AK-47 rifles. Authorities have secured the area, ensuring the safety of passengers who had sought refuge in nearby homes.
Although the motive behind the attack remains unclear, reports suggest it may be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict. This incident brings the death toll to 49 since the conflict resurfaced in October 2024.
