British conman and serial fraudster Robert Hendy-Freegard has been sentenced to six years in prison by a French court for running over two police officers.
A court in Guéret, central France, handed down the sentence on Friday, February 7 also ordering him to compensate the injured officers.
Hendy-Freegard, 53, was previously convicted in the United Kingdom for manipulating and defrauding women over several decades, a case that inspired multiple documentaries.
The latest incident occurred in August 2022 when police visited his home in a small town in the Massif Central to investigate irregularities in the dog breeding business he ran with his partner. Upon his arrival, officers requested his identification, but he accelerated his vehicle, hitting a male and female officer, leaving one with serious injuries.
He fled the scene and was arrested days later in Belgium.
Hendy-Freegard’s crimes have been widely publicized, with Netflix’s The Puppet Master and the British documentary The Spy Who Stole My Life detailing how he posed as a secret agent to manipulate women. He allegedly coerced victims into severing ties with their families before financially exploiting them.
Media reports also revealed that his partner in France had been reported missing in the UK for years. She reportedly lived in isolation, avoiding contact with neighbours.
