The Coalition of Nzema Youth (NYC) has petitioned President John Dramani Mahama, and has called for the suspension of the Petroleum Hub Development Project in the Domunli enclave of the Jomoro Municipality.
The 20,000-acre project, designed to enhance oil refining, petrochemical production, and storage infrastructure, has raised concerns over land acquisition, environmental risks, and inadequate community engagement.
The petition argues that affected communities were not granted Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) before the project’s approval, violating international human rights standards.
Speaking to Citi News, the association’s Executive Secretary, Kwasi Simon, urged the President to investigate the land acquisition process and scrutinize the legitimacy of the project’s investors before moving forward with development.
“We are pleading with the current government to look through this compulsory land acquisition. The project is not for the Ghana Government project, it is a privately led project and for that matter, the process for acquiring land, this government should look through and investigate it.
He further assured the government of releasing the 7000 acres of land for the commencement of the project if only they are willing to continue since it has been stated in the strategic assessment report that, that is the required size to be used for the project.
“Based on the strategic assessment report there were so many concerns related to the stands of the land for the project and they stated in their report that 7000 acres of land can befit the project not even the 20,000 so we want the government to look at it, and if the government is ready to continue with the project, we the people of the Nzema land are ready to release the 7000 acres of land to the government to commence the project.
