We’ll rid Accra of filth and indiscipline soon – Oko Vanderpuije

Former Accra Mayor and current Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, has assured Ghanaians that the National Democratic Congress (NDC)-led government will take decisive steps to address Accra’s sanitation challenges, congestion, and general indiscipline.

He emphasized that once District Chief Executives (DCEs) are sworn into office, they will receive direct instructions to prioritize sanitation and urban order as part of the NDC’s broader agenda to reset the country.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, ahead of the State of the Nation Address, Oko Vanderpuije highlighted the persistent challenges facing Accra, including waste management issues, street congestion, and illegal trading.

According to him, the NDC’s overwhelming victory in the 2024 elections reflects the people’s demand for real change and effective governance. He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to revitalizing institutions, improving service delivery, and restoring public confidence.

“Very soon, we will have our District Chief Executives, and when that is done, they will be informed and instructed to ensure that we reset in all operations, and the sanitation issue will be taken care of.

“We will deal with the congestion and illegal activities of traders, and all other matters of concern will be addressed. That is what we campaigned on, and the people voted massively for us, so we will make Ghana work again,” he stated.

Accra has long struggled with poor waste management, indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and clogged drainage systems that contribute to perennial flooding.

Despite various policies introduced by successive governments—including the Sanitation and Pollution Levy and the establishment of the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources—the city continues to grapple with chronic sanitation and congestion issues.
