A day after a massive fire swept through Kumasi’s Central Business District in Adum, smoke, and embers continued to smolder in the wreckage.
The blaze, which erupted in the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2025, caused extensive damage to several shops, prompting an immediate response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the day and into the evening to contain and extinguish the flames.
The affected commercial hub, home to businesses dealing in mobile phones, accessories, jewellery, clothing, and second-hand items, suffered one of Kumasi’s most devastating fire incidents in recent history.
Excavators were deployed on Saturday, March 22, to demolish partially damaged structures, allowing firefighters better access to extinguish any remaining flames. The blaze left numerous shops in ruins, reducing metal containers to charred wreckage.
Affected traders scrambled to retrieve whatever remained of their goods, while others, fearing the fire could spread, moved their merchandise to safer locations.
Several individuals suffered injuries and panic attacks, with some receiving first aid before being transported to the Manhyia Government Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
According to the National Ambulance Service, at least nine people, including firefighters, sustained injuries, while many others remain shaken by the disaster.
Emergency crews are still on-site, working to fully extinguish the fire and assess the extent of the destruction.
