The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has urged the public to use a whistleblowing mechanism to tackle cases of romance fraud.
This was highlighted at the launch of a fraud reporting campaign by EOCO and the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA UK).
Director of Administration, Edward Cudjoe, on behalf of Abdulai Bashiru Dapilah, Acting Executive Director expressed concern about the exponential rate of romance fraud cases in Ghana and its dire economic impact.
“Both EOCO and NCA are committed to working together to bring this menace to its barest minimum. By joining forces, we aim to protect the public from the devastating effects of raw fraud and other types of economic and organised crimes.
“The highlights of this campaign, the first would be to raise awareness about the dangers of romance fraud and other types of economic and organised crime, to encourage the public to protect, to report malicious activity in relation to romance fraud, provide education and support to the public, share intelligence and best practices to disrupt and dismantle fraud networks, and, finally, to create a safer and more secure economic environment for everyone.
“The call to action is that we encourage everybody to get involved by reporting any suspicious activity related to fraud, particularly romance fraud or as we call it ‘Sakawa,’ to the EOCO through this number, 0547491491, or call toll free on 0800910910. We also call on the public to share the information about the campaign through these mediums with friends and family,” he said.
