Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has responded defiantly to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to refer her to its National Disciplinary Committee over her recent media comments.
In an interview on Joy News’ on Thursday, March 20, Safo criticized the party’s directive that bars members from publicly discussing internal matters, labelling it as unconstitutional and an infringement on her right to free speech.
She emphasized that the NPP is a collective entity, not owned by any individual, and expressed her determination not to be silenced.
The NPP’s action came after Safo’s public remarks, which the party viewed as a breach of an earlier directive aimed at maintaining unity and discipline among members.
“Nobody brought me to the party, and the party is not for anyone. We are all in there to build the party, so nobody can force me out and can’t force me to keep my mouth shut. We all have the right to express ourselves, and that includes me,” she asserted.
She criticized the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong for inconsistency in his public statements.
She referenced his previous remarks following the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat, suggesting that his own public comments undermine the party’s directive to cease media engagements on internal matters.
“The General Secretary began speaking publicly after we lost the election, going around explaining the situation. He even went as far as telling people not to blame him for the loss.
“And now, when it’s my turn to speak, a statement is being issued. What locus does he have to do that?” she asked.
She further dismissed the statement directed at her and challenged the General Secretary to address her privately if he had any personal concerns.
“He was on the radio himself, so if he wants to write a letter to me, he should do so privately. This statement is too vague, and I don’t think it’s something I need to respond to.”
Adwoa Safo insisted on addressing the campaign aimed at tarnishing her reputation within the party.
“There has been a character assassination on me. I have been defamed by my own party,” Adowa Safo pointed out.
