Benedict Ofori Debrah, a distinguished graduate of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Legon, has secured third place in the prestigious West African Examination Council (WAEC) International Excellence Award for his outstanding performance in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The announcement was made during WAEC’s 73rd Annual Council Meeting, held from March 17 to 21, 2025, in Monrovia, Liberia. The event honoured the region’s top academic achievers, recognizing Debrah among an elite group of students selected from 2,455,063 candidates across the Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
Debrah excelled in the WASSCE with A1 grades in all eight subjects, placing him a place alongside second-place winner Henschel Tabi Frempong-Manso of Kade Senior High Technical School, who also achieved straight A1s. Both students are now pursuing Bachelor of Science degrees in Human Biology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The recognition highlights the strength of Ghana’s educational institutions, particularly PRESEC, which has consistently produced top-performing students.
Debrah credited his alma mater’s rigorous academic environment for shaping his success. His achievement, along with that of Frempong-Manso, reinforced Ghana’s dominance in academic excellence, with two of the top three awardees hailing from the country.
