Three Ghanaian students from the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Legon, Hope College and the Kade senior high school have emerged among the top winners of the 2024 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) International Excellence Awards, alongside a student from Liberia.
The Ghanaian awardees David Nii Commey Ankrah, Henschel Tabi Frempong-Manso, and Benedict Ofori Debrah secured first, second, and third places, respectively. Ankrah tied for the top spot with a Liberian student, while Frempong-Manso and Debrah followed in second and third positions.
These outstanding students were selected from over 1 million candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
Their achievements were announced at WAEC’s 73rd Annual Council Meeting, held from March 17 to 21, 2025, in Monrovia, Liberia, to celebrate the region’s highest-performing students.
Debrah, a graduate of Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Legon, earned A1 grades in all eight subjects, securing his place among the top three.
Debrah now studies Human Biology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), alongside second-place winner Frempong-Manso of Kade Senior High Technical School, who also achieved straight A1s.
The WAEC International Excellence Awards recognize exceptional academic performance in WASSCE, a crucial examination for students in West Africa.
The success of these Ghanaian students reinforces the country’s strong educational foundation, particularly highlighting PRESEC’s track record of academic excellence. Debrah credited his alma mater’s rigorous academic training for his achievement and looks forward to a promising future in human biology.
