Walewale MP accuses security forces of extortion, human rights abuses

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Abdul Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has accused security personnel in the area of extortion, human rights abuses, and unlawful home invasions during curfew hours.

Walewale and its surrounding areas remain under a curfew from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., following a surge in violent incidents along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.

The curfew was initially enforced from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. but was later adjusted due to an improved security situation and the absence of further attacks.

Speaking to Citi News on March 9, Mr Kabiru Tiah criticized the excessive use of force by security personnel, stressing that their operations must be conducted professionally and lawfully.

He questioned the rationale behind the continued curfew and condemned the alleged misconduct of security forces, including unauthorized searches, looting, and brutality against residents.

“The conduct of security personnel on the ground is deeply concerning. The way these operations are being carried out is alarming, and the people are not happy.

Reports indicate that military personnel are entering homes unannounced and looting residents’ belongings. That is not their duty. Their role is to apprehend criminals, not to vandalize the hard-earned property of innocent people.

“A video was sent to me showing military personnel recklessly scattering people’s belongings during a search. Even if you are looking for weapons, there should be a proper way to conduct searches without causing unnecessary destruction.

“The brutality against residents and the ongoing situation in Walewale is unfortunate, and we must all condemn these acts,” he stated.

Mr. Kabiru Tiah urged the government to ensure accountability and called on residents to cooperate with security personnel to maintain peace in Walewale.
