The Minority in Parliament has dismissed claims that the Akufo-Addo government implemented a betting tax before its recent abolishment in the 2025 budget.
This comes after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, during the budget presentation on Tuesday, March 11, announced the removal of several taxes, including the Betting Tax, E-Levy, and COVID-19 Levy.
Addressing a press conference, former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam refuted the claim, stating that the previous government never enforced the betting tax.
“The betting tax they said they have abolished, we never collected betting tax. We never implemented the betting tax,” he pointed out.
Dr. Adam accused the government of misleading the public by claiming credit for scrapping a tax that was never in effect.
“So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that was not implemented, it to deceive the people of Ghana,” he stated.
The Minority maintains that the Mahama government must be transparent in its fiscal policies and avoid taking credit for non-existent reforms.
