Focus on party unity, not tours — Dr. Asah-Asante tells NPP

Political Analyst Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has strongly criticised the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over the party’s ongoing nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ following its 2024 electoral defeat.

Speaking in an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Monday, April 28, Dr. Asah-Asante argued that the party’s priority should be addressing internal grievances and fostering unity, rather than embarking on public tours.

According to Dr. Asah-Asante, many NPP supporters remain disgruntled following the party primaries and subsequent electoral loss, and the leadership must focus on reconciling with those aggrieved members.

He noted that unresolved issues of disaffection continue to threaten the party’s cohesion.

He cited lingering resentment among figures such as Amoako Baah and others, who, he said, feel sidelined for legitimate reasons, stressing the need for the party to actively reach out and reconcile with them, including former National Chairman Paul Afoko.

“I support that view, because I’ve said that that exercise is a bogus one. Because you have problems that continue to linger within the frontiers of the party.

“Issues of disaffection relative to the primaries that were organised. There were people who were hurt, disenchanted—have they reconciled them? And you’re going on a tour. There are people like Amoako Baah and co who are very bitter for very good reasons.

“You need to sit down, talk about it, and deal with those issues and bring them into the fold. The people that you jettisoned some years ago—Afoko and the likes. The game of politics is a game of numbers; so every soul counts, every vote is important,” he advised.

Dr. Asah-Asante reiterated that healing internal wounds must be the NPP’s immediate focus if it hopes to rebuild ahead of future elections.
