Police deny detention of officers over Judge’s traffic arrest

The Ghana Police Service has dismissed reports circulating in parts of the media claiming that four officers were detained for arresting a Circuit Court Judge over a traffic offence, describing the publication as “false, baseless and without merit.”

In a statement issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Service said the reports misrepresent an ongoing investigation into a complaint lodged by the judge, and clarified that none of the officers involved have been detained.

“The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has sighted some media reports falsely claiming that some Police officers were detained for arresting a judge for a traffic offence. We wish to categorically state that the claim is not just false, but is baseless and without merit,” the statement said.

According to the CID, the matter stems from a petition received on 7th April 2025 from a Circuit Court Judge, who alleged that on 13th December 2024, four officers from the Adenta Divisional Police Command—led by Inspector Godwin Dey—harassed her, assaulted her court clerk, and wrongfully towed her vehicle from the frontage of the Adenta Court Complex to the Adenta Police Station.

The judge further indicated that despite lodging a formal complaint with the Adenta Divisional Command, she’s yet to receive a response.

Following the petition, the CID said it began investigations and invited the implicated officers—Inspector Godwin Dey, Inspector Francis Adjei, G/Sgt Dasebre Oti Boateng, and G/Cpl Jonah Ajubulisa—to provide their accounts.

“The officers were identified and invited to the CID headquarters and given the opportunity to tell their side of the story. They left the CID headquarters immediately after their statements were taken. At no point were the officers detained as has been falsely reported,” the statement emphasized.

The Police Administration urged the public to disregard the reports and reaffirmed its commitment to due process.

“We therefore urge the public to disregard the publication and treat it as false and without any basis. The Police Administration will continue with the investigation into the case in line with laid down procedures.”

The Service also reiterated its position on accountability and professionalism, assuring the public that it will continue to support officers who act lawfully, while taking action against misconduct.

“We would like to assure the general public that, whereas the Police Administration will stand by its officers who follow the rules in the discharge of their lawful duties, any reported incidents of misconduct by officers towards members of the public will be promptly investigated and the necessary actions taken,” the statement concluded.
