The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has dismissed claims that the Mahama-led administration is attempting to pack the judiciary with National Democratic Congress (NDC) loyalists.
His comments follow widespread public debate triggered by President John Dramani Mahama’s recent nomination of seven justices to the Supreme Court. Critics have questioned the timing and alleged political motivations behind the appointments.
Speaking on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV on Tuesday, May 13, Mr. Tamakloe rejected these assertions, stressing that the majority of the nominated justices were originally appointed by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“As we speak, there are about 48 Court of Appeal judges, 44 appointed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo alone as President [within 8 years]. Of that number, only four had been appointed by a President other than Nana Addo,” he pointed out.
He clarified that out of the seven justices nominated by President Mahama for elevation to the Supreme Court, only two were not appointed by former President Akufo-Addo.
“Out of the seven, President John Dramani Mahama is promoting, or elevating to the Supreme Court, only two are not Akufo-Addo’s appointees. The remaining five are all persons whom former President Akufo-Addo appointed to the Court of Appeal,” he said.
Mr. Tamakloe affirmed the professional merit of the nominees amidst political debate over the role and independence of Ghana’s judiciary.
“Each one of them has a distinguished judicial career,” he remarked.
