‘Barbaric and Unlawful’: NPP slams NIB over arrest of Adenta Kumi

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised serious concerns over the arrest and detention of party activist and former parliamentary aspirant, Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi.

According to NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has violated Kumi’s fundamental human rights.

Kumi was arrested at dawn on Friday, May 23, 2025, and is currently being held at the NIB office in Kawokudi, Accra. The exact reasons for his arrest remain unclear, but the NPP believes it may be connected to a petition he submitted earlier this week to President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The petition calls for the dissolution of the committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice, citing alleged misconduct among committee members.

Kodua, speaking on Citi Prime News on Friday, May 23, expressed outrage over the handling of Kumi’s arrest.

“Well, certainly we think it is linked to the petition until the NIB comes out with a different reason because that is what we all know—that he has petitioned the President this week and is yet to receive an acknowledgment of it,” he stated.

Regardless of the motive behind the arrest, Kodua emphasised that Kumi’s rights had been violated.

“Whatever reason they may have, whether it is linked to the petition or any other matter, he still has a fundamental human right.

“His human rights have been abused because that is not a way to arrest and detain a person. At least the due process must be followed.”

Calling for swift intervention, Kodua urged civil society organizations (CSOs), the media, and the diplomatic community to condemn what he described as an “unlawful barbaric act” by a state institution.

He insisted that due process must be respected in all legal proceedings.
