Bawumia urges calm as confusion grows over Wontumi’s whereabouts

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has appealed for calm among party supporters following confusion over the whereabouts of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Dr. Bawumia, alongside other senior NPP figures including Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had visited the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Accra on Friday, May 30, in an attempt to meet the bail conditions set for Wontumi.

However, officials at the NIB reportedly told the delegation that Wontumi was not in their custody but rather in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The development has fueled tension among party supporters, particularly after reports that Wontumi had been transferred to the NIB earlier in the day.

Addressing journalists on Friday, May 30, Dr. Bawumia urged supporters to remain peaceful and allow the legal process to take its course.

“I believe this was just set to prevent his release. We’re going to follow the legal process to make sure he’s released as soon as possible. I want to plead with all of you to remain calm as we work behind the scenes to make sure he’s out.

“I believe that we will be successful. But we have to be calm and not take the law into our own hands. It’s important we follow due process so that he’s released safe and sound.”

I’m disappointed we were unable to see Wontumi – Bawumia
