The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has cautioned Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA), over his continued use of the honorary title “Doctor” in public.

In a letter issued on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the Commission requested details about the institution that awarded the honorary doctorate, the process involved, and the date it was conferred.

GTEC emphasised that using honorary doctorates as formal titles is unethical and violates the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), along with other relevant education laws.

The Commission warned that failure to comply with its directive could lead to sanctions under its regulatory authority.

GTEC further urged Dr. Obeng to take personal responsibility and immediately stop using the title “Dr.” as part of his name.
