The Member of Parliament for Nalerigu/Gambaga, Nurudeen Mohammed Mumuni, has expressed disappointment in President John Dramani Mahama’s handling of the controversial dollar gift incident involving the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi.
On Thursday, May 15, the Minority submitted petitions to three key state institutions—the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP)—urging them to probe the matter.
This action comes in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s statement a day earlier, in which he announced that no further disciplinary measures would be taken against Gyamfi. The President said he had accepted Gyamfi’s public apology and considered the matter resolved, but added a stern caution as part of his response.
Speaking on Eyewitness News with Sammi Wiafe on Thursday, May 15, the MP for Nalerigu/Gambaga maintained that an independent investigation is necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of public office misconduct.
“We want to see Mr. Sammy Gyamfi to be cleared or punished well and cleared appropriately. We were expecting that H.E. President John Dramani Mahama would refer the issue to one of the state institutions to investigate Sammy Gyamfi for his reputation’s sake, to be cleared and cleared well.
“Unfortunately, the President has become the number one clearing agent within four months in his government,” he argued.
A viral video surfaced showing Sammy Gyamfi handing over bundles of U.S. dollars to former fetish priest-turned-evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa. The incident sparked widespread criticism, with many deeming the gesture inappropriate and indicative of poor judgment.
In response to the backlash, Sammy Gyamfi issued a public apology, acknowledging the act as a lapse in judgment and expressing remorse for the public concern it caused.
