The Ghana Police Service has begun processes to incorporate neighborhood watchdogs into its operations to combat drug peddling and abuse, particularly in Zongo communities.
This move follows a directive from the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, issued during a recent visit to Sabon Zongo in Accra.
Muntaka pledged to prioritise the recruitment of individuals who assist in the arrest of drug offenders into the security services.
According to him, this forms part of a broader government strategy to address the growing menace of drug trafficking and abuse, especially in Zongo areas.
Speaking at a sensitization programme at Sabon Zongo on Thursday, May 8, the Interior Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering Zongo youth through socioeconomically focused initiatives.
The watchdog groups—comprising both men and women—will help identify drug peddling hotspots and lead a decentralized effort to tackle the problem at the community level.
Approximately 140 individuals have already been enrolled in the programme.
