Pupils of Yapei Presby Primary School in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region study on the bare floor due to the lack of furniture.

The learners are compelled to lie on their bellies or sit on the bare floor to write and study.

Yapei Presby Primary has two blocks, A and B, which have a 340 and 319 student population, respectively.

Channel One News’ visit to the school revealed that the school has been in a deplorable state, with the cemented floor in the classrooms of the school worn off, doors and windows not in good shape.

John Fuseini, PTA and SMC chairman, said they have been battling with this situation for a very long time, and some residents have shown concern by providing and assisting the school, but the situation is now unbearable.

He added that the school lacks teaching staff, which affects teaching and learning activities in the school.

“Our school lacks teachers, furniture. It also needs renovation. Indeed last three years, we did our best as PTA, but it wasn’t enough,” he said.

Abdulai Abdul Mumin, Senior Prefect of Yapei Presby Primary, is appealing to the government and stakeholders to come to their aid to help them with the furniture and a KG block.

“We are pleading with the Member of Parliament, the District Assembly and the government to support us with a classroom,” he said.

Iddi Kamil, Assembly member Yapei Electoral Area and Presiding Member Central Gonja District Assembly, indicated that the school has teachers’ bungalows, which are now a death trap which has resulted in the situation that the teachers are compelled to rent and stay far from the school, which also delays teaching and learning activities.

“The teachers do not want to stay in. It is a death trap now. Teachers resort to renting from town. Others stay far, so they come to school very late. We are calling on the government and other organisations to help us,” he said.
