Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor has been handed a fresh mandate to lead the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) after securing a decisive win in the association’s national elections held on Monday, June 30.

Dwumfuor, who first assumed the presidency in 2022, received 445 votes — representing 64.49% of the total valid ballots — to fend off a strong challenge from Charles Yao Mawusi, who polled 245 votes (35.51%).

The election, which saw over 800 accredited members casting their votes across the country, also filled five other national executive positions, alongside multiple regional leadership slots.

Though a latecomer to the race, Mawusi’s entry unexpectedly revitalized the contest, forcing the incumbent to recalibrate his campaign strategy and rally fresh endorsements to maintain his footing.

In other results, Rebecca Ekpe of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation was elected Vice President, succeeding Linda Asante. Ekpe, who previously served as Public Affairs Officer, defeated Mary Mensah of the Graphic Communications Group.

Suleiman Mustapha, also of the Graphic Communications Group, emerged victorious as Organising Secretary, while Zadok Kwame Gyesi clinched the Public Affairs Officer position.

In total, 12 candidates vied for six national executive roles, while 49 others competed for regional offices — underscoring a competitive and widely participated election cycle.

The newly elected executives will serve a three-year term, with expectations high for them to steer the GJA through critical reforms and advocacy in the evolving media landscape.
