Desmond Paitoo: I’ve done nothing wrong, my ‘Dr’ title is honorary

Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, Desmond De-Graft Paitoo, has responded to an inquiry from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) regarding his use of the “Dr.” title.

In a letter that has since circulated widely, GTEC requested that the MP clarify the institution that awarded him the doctorate, whether it was earned or honorary, and the date it was conferred.

Speaking to Channel One on Friday, June 20, the MP revealed that he has instructed his lawyers to respond formally to the Commission. He, however, raised concerns about what he views as politically motivated actions by GTEC.

“I wonder why GTEC is targeting the NDC members, and who is influencing them to do that. If you want to invite me for questioning, write a letter to me personally. I have handed over the case to my lawyer, so I will speak once he responds,” he said.

Mr. Paitoo also denied using the honorary title in any official capacity.

“I didn’t earn anything on my own; I was honoured for the work that I have done. It is not an academically earned title. Even on my website, I haven’t put anything there,” he explained.

The MP suggested that the Commission’s public approach raises suspicion of partisan targeting, particularly against members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I wonder why GTEC is targeting the NDC members,” he reiterated, calling for a more professional and confidential mode of communication from the Commission.
