The Ghana Association of Certified Registered Anaesthetists (GACRA) has issued a strong public warning against a group it says is unlawfully presenting itself as the legitimate representative body of certified registered anaesthetists in Ghana.
In a press statement dated June 26, 2025, GACRA raised concerns about a group identifying as the “Physician Assistants and Certified Registered Anaesthetists Group,” which it accused of impersonating the legally registered association and misleading both the public and government stakeholders.
GACRA clarified that it is the only legally recognised professional body representing certified registered anaesthetists in Ghana, duly registered under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992), and certified as a union under the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651). The association holds both a Trade Union Registration Certificate and a Collective Bargaining Certificate (Reg. No. RTU/109), authorising it to engage in all negotiations and matters relating to the employment and welfare of its members.
According to GACRA, the impersonating group is not registered under any legal framework governing professional associations or trade unions in Ghana.
Despite lacking legal status, the group has reportedly been negotiating conditions of service with the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association.
GACRA has firmly dissociated itself from the group, warning that its actions are “deceptive and unlawful” and pose risks to professional standards, sector negotiations, and the regulatory integrity of the anaesthesia profession in the country.
“The public is strongly advised that any engagement with the so-called Physician Assistants and Certified Registered Anaesthetists Group is done entirely at their own risk,” the statement cautioned.
The association has copied its concerns to the Minister for Health, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, the Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, and all media houses.
GACRA’s leadership, represented by President James Nwinsagra and Vice Secretary Joshua Annovi Kunfah, urged stakeholders to respect and engage only with legally mandated institutions to protect the credibility and integrity of healthcare professionals in Ghana.
