The CEO of Mpontu Technologies, Stephane Nwolley, has called on the government to make strategic investments in artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure it becomes a vital part of Ghana’s digital transformation journey.
Speaking during Week 4 of the #CitiBusinessFestival 2025 On-Air Series on the topic “Africa’s Place in the AI Revolution,” Nwolley emphasized the enormous opportunities AI presents for transforming sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and finance. However, he warned that Ghana risks falling behind if there is no deliberate investment in AI infrastructure, research, data systems, and talent development.
He urged the government to create enabling policies and foster strong public-private partnerships to accelerate AI adoption.
“We need to be intentional. The question is: how do we form proper public-private partnerships? Look at the United States—they brought in OpenAI, had conversations with developers and strategists. That sent a strong signal of collaboration.
China did something similar—it was a high-level political move that showed their commitment to AI. Even in the Middle East, governments are actively speaking about and investing heavily in this space.
Recently, an administration announced a $1 billion investment in AI. We need to do something similar. It starts by identifying the key players in our ecosystem and understanding what support they need.
At Mpontu, we’ve already begun investing in our own small way. But government support—especially in areas like infrastructure, model development, and talent training—would be instrumental. It’s still early, but this is the time to position Ghana as a leader in Africa’s AI journey,” he stated.
