Heavy security deployed to Nkwanta South after renewed chieftaincy clashes

Tensions have once again erupted in Nkwanta South in the Oti Region, prompting the deployment of heavy security personnel following renewed chieftaincy-related violence in the area.

The latest clash occurred on Wednesday, June 26, when a group attempted to pour libation as part of preparations for the upcoming Yam Festival. The act was resisted by another faction, reigniting longstanding tensions among the town’s ethnic groups.

In an interview on Citi Prime News, Nkwanta South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Joseph Antwi, confirmed that two individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the disturbance and are currently receiving medical attention.

According to the MCE, the incident caught local authorities off guard, especially given that a prior agreement had been reached to suspend all public festivals amid heightened tensions.

“Just about a month ago, the regional minister for Oti invited the three ethnic groups to let them know the decision of the government, that no faction should celebrate any festival in town.

“They all agreed. But to our surprise, yesterday, I was at the office and I received a lot of calls that a group is pouring libation to let people be aware that there is to be a yam festival. Quickly, we invited security who patrolled the town and assured that everything was under control until we heard gunshots again last night,” he explained.

He noted that initial deployments were made to maintain order, but after gunshots rang out again later in the evening, additional reinforcements were called in by the Regional Security Council.

“We spoke to the Regional Security Commander. He deployed men to add to the team, and the situation is calm now,” he added.

Mr. Antwi further revealed that portions of the town have been deserted by residents out of fear of renewed violence, underscoring the fragile peace in the municipality.
