The National Labour Commission (NLC) has blamed the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) for its earlier inability to intervene in the ongoing strike, citing the union’s failure to honour a previous invitation.
This follows the successful service of injunction orders on the GRNMA after a High Court granted permission for substituted service.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, June 10, Assistant Public Relations Officer of the NLC, Julia Pwoawuvi, stated that the injunction compels the striking nurses to immediately call off their action and engage with the government.
She noted that while the injunction addresses the legality of the strike, it does not resolve the core issues in dispute.
“The Commission is an adjudicating body. When the union first wrote to us about their intention to strike, we invited all parties to appear before us to address the matter and make a determination,” she said.
“Unfortunately, they failed to appear before the Commission, so we couldn’t proceed—and that was not due to any lapse on our part,” she added.
The parties are expected to return to the Commission with a status report on their engagements by June 25.
