Tema Central MP urges Govt to meet striking nurses halfway

Tema Central Member of Parliament, Charles Forson, has appealed to the Mahama-led administration to take swift action in addressing the grievances of striking nurses and midwives, urging a compromise on their conditions of service.

This comes as members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) continue their industrial action, despite an interlocutory injunction secured by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to halt the strike. The association insists it has not received any official communication and maintains that the strike remains in force.

Speaking with Charles Owusu Kumi on Channel One Newsroom, Charles Forson stressed the urgency of resolving the impasse to prevent a crisis in healthcare delivery.

“I believe that they [government] need to implement the conditions of service they agreed to. Human life is important. We do believe that as a caucus, as a committee, the government must go ahead and meet them, if not in full, at least halfway, so that the nurses will return to the hospitals,” he urged.

Forson warned that inaction could have dire consequences.

“For the government to sit back and not inject and make any payment towards any matured statutory requirements, it’s going to affect the good of this nation,” he warned.

He added that the impact of the strike is already being felt in his constituency.

“It’s having a severe toll on us,” he said.
